Sorry this post is late. I have honestly needed to take care of myself.
But Happy October. In the spirit of the season I wanted to make myself useful to you all and attempt to answer the daunting question of “What should I be for Halloween?”
I have some answers for you. Because for some reason, when it comes to Halloween I am able to figure out a costume idea for everyone besides myself. Case specific, I like to consider a person’s personal style, their personality, their media diet and their hair color when I think of a costume. In my Substack chat see here, I even went so far as to source specific costumes and then outfits for people based on their current ideas or general interests.
I have attempted to divide this costume guide into the following categories: Kitschy, Cartoon Film Characters, Film Characters, Celebrity and Niche Fashion
Kitschy
Boxer - gloves, cheap robe, 2 messy braids, rewatch of Rocky or Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980) and you’re ready to enter the ring!
Strawberry - You need just this ornamental hat. Red or green rest of outfit.
Sonny Angel - You need just this hat from An.me the best shop ever. Rosa Jisoo Pyo showed us how to nail this one. So amazing.
Ladybug - cute spotted knit hat, attennae and little amazing wings.
Cupcake - adorable hat or knitted beanie, easy with existing pink and brown top + pants
Sailor - thinking JPG’s version of a sailor and just some amazing navy top with an easy sailor cap.
Spider - Are you killer at makeup? Spiderwebs over the face then classic easy black outfit like this.
Mime - creepy to some but quite chic in my opinion and easy stripe shirt, white gloves, black beret.
Jack-o-lantern - This Mimi Wade dress haunts my dreams (it’s sold out). But why spend the $300 when you can find an Ebay jack-o-lantern shirt like this or this cut the top, and wear it as a strapless dress with black boots?
Cartoon Film Characters
Kiki, Kiki’s Delivery Service - You need a huge red ribbon to tie around your head. I like the ribbon from Paper Source. Make sure the bow is quite floppy. Then you need an easy blue quarter-sleeve navy dress, something like this. Perhaps a broomstick from your kitchen and easy red shoes!
Wilma Flinstone - I love the simplicity of this elegant 1 shoulder white dress, add the statement chunky white bead necklace and throw that hair in a neat up do you’re good to go!
Jessica Rabbit, Who Framed Roger Rabbit - To me the modern Jessica Rabbit is decked out in Fanci Club Vietnamese designer Duy Tran’s iconic body-hugging designs. My vision for Jessica is specifically wearing this dress and these gloves.
Kim Possible - Vintage gap everything. Kim is comfortable af and these are pieces you can definitely re-wear. I’d do this shirt and ride it up a bit. Oversized khakis all the way. These, these or these. Go crazy with this epic KIM inspired utility belt (super beautiful) and easy black gloves!
Betty Boop - Hard not to love this adorable chick! Star of the outfit is indeed spiked short hair so invest in some strong hold gel. Hairstylists I work with most often use this one! I liked these easy and comfortable red dresses here, here and here. To top it off, gold statement bangles and earrings to match.
Lola Bunny, Space Jam - The queen of the court needs a basketball first and foremost. Secondly, this costume set with the “Toonsquad” logo on the front because how epic! Lastly, you need this navy blue cotton scrunchie for Lola’s beautiful swept-up athletic charming ponytail.
Film Characters
Suki, Fast and Furious - I admittedly do not hate this getup from Dolls Kill and think you can cover all bases with it. You can also create this swag yourself with easy cotton purple tanks see here and here. Hair I would wear sleek as fuck and straight.
Diane Keaton, Annie Hall - This is classic and easy to make with just a Bowler Hat, mens suit vest, and a thrift store tie.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Secretary - One of the original office sirens in my opinion, I would do just a white silk blouse, black pencil skirt and I would HAVE some handcuffs as accessory and a print out with typos. A mini typewriter also does not hurt.
Parker Posey, Party Girl - Someone in My Chat specifically requested Parker Posey’s outfit on the poster of Party Girl and I loved this color block magenta sweater and then these fruit pieces for a DIY hair accessory.
Raven Symone, That’s So Raven - I would go for this iconic Raven look with a pink jacket something like this you’ll also need a matching purple scrunchie and a pink cotton henley.
Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich - I am specifically referencing the Movie poster where Julia has the child propped up against her (super iconic badass shit). And I would style the look with Levi’s 501, a curly updo, tortoiseshell sunnies, and this perfect Bralette cami from Pretties where I used to work when I was 19 and full of hope. I would also do medium silver hoops.
Meredith Blake, The Parent Trap - FUN one. I would do her camping outfit here. And you need this bra top, black capri leggings, a plastic lizard, and a bottle of Evian water!
Pam Grier, Jackie Brown - Pam power blue suit. I would wear this open. White blouse, nametag and epic leather tan bag to polish it all off.
Patrick Bateman, American Pyscho - I would style for this look in particular because it has such a New York walking through slight October chill to it. I would go for this Brooks Brothers Shirt, this vintage silk tie, this Margiela Navy jacket, and polished off with these wired headphones. Bonus points if you slick your hair back.
Kiera Knightley, Atonement Dress - This mimic dress. I think is worth the $200 if you are looking to nail this costume. The only other element is your commitment to understanding and learning a finger waves hairstyle, see tutorial here.
Carrie Window Knocking Outfit, Sex and the City - I like this better for the Carrie gray dress moment because. the quality of the cotton feels more on par to what Pat Field would have actually sourced. Then you need vintage Ray ban aviators and rocking curly hair!
Tai Frasier, Clueless - I used to work at Pretties venice and Linda the owner remade this exact shirt from Clueless that Tai wears in the mirror! So yea, I would wear this shirt, a red cord skirt, and cute mary janes.
Zendaya, Challengers - I loved Tashi Duncan’s sleek blue dress and for the look I would go for something like this, or this. Sleek straight hair, maybe a tennis ball prop?
Isabelle Huppert, The Piano Teacher - I love the yellow shirt moment. I would go for this cream silk blouse or this one and also carry a pen for the “stabbing” motion. Oh and a low bun with a middle part.
Nicole Kidman, Eyes Wide Shut - The Hanro mercerized cotton spaghetti tank is the same shirt that Nicole wore in the dreamy, haze filled joint scene smoking with Tom Cruise. I have vouched for Hanro for years. The quality is elite. I would finish it off with these Bonnie Clyde’s. And of course, loosely falling curls in an up do.
Celebrity
Rihanna Swarovski Crystals Dress - I would Do this dress, a divine pink stole and a Crystal headscarf like this. Oh and dangly teardrop earrings like these.
Jane Fonda, Barbarella - You need VOLUMINIOUS HUGE HAIR! Invest in some teasing time. And then do a Chainmail crop top, belt to match, flat go go boots and a nice stack of silver cuffs and bangles. Don’t forget fun tights! And build a Barbarella canon out of tin foil and 2 empty soda cans.
Meryl Streep, rehearsing for Shakespeare in the Park - Sorry this will be the only expensive link within the guide but for this moment I believe this Vivienne Westwood dress is the only way to go! Of course paired with a beat up Navy hat.
Nicki Minaj recording Roman’s Revenge - This is a perfect outfit to me and easily made up from a floppy straw hat, epic Rainbow scarf and studio headphones. For this costume you need to know Nicki’s verse.
Xtina in Dirrty - I was this last year! Honestly I just wore this costume (I was heavily inspired by Kylie Jenner’s cunty Halloween moment replicating this look in 2016!).
Lil Kim Purple Jumpsuit - This Dollskill fit has my seal of approval. It’s pretty comprehensive. And the lilac is just so pretty!!!
Bjork’s Swan Outfit - For this iconic moment I would style this dress. I do wish the Swan was more alive looking and fluffy but hey is what it is.
Niche Fashion
Ashley Olsen walking in woods with machete - Really fun one. Throw on a backwards black baseball cap, wear a pullover sweatshirt with one of your arms sticking out, some oversized baggy cargos, Yeezy lookalikes, oversized black sunglasses and a glass tumbler with beer.
Grace Jones Jean Paul Goude Image - You need Huile Shimmer oil all over for Grace’s glow, a peachy pink sweatband set one on your thigh one around your boobs and then just a microphone.
Isabella Blow in a Philip Treacy Hat - Isabella is an icon. And deserves her flowers. She was an early supporter of Philip and Lee McQueen. Pay her some homage with a hat like this for a Maleficent costume and then put some lace over it.
Andre Leon Talley in Fur, Any Andre moment in his glamorous fur is an iconic look IMO. I would go for oversized black sunglasses, amazing fur stole and velour track pants.
Shalom Harlow in the McQueen Dress - Okay I would just wear this White tulle skirt as a dress, belt it with something like this, and wear a MASK and spray paint the shit out of it with green and black.
Angelica Huston in this one picture - this pic turns me ON. Do it right with a hanes cotton undershirt, Ralph riding pants, leather riding boots, jelly bracelets and most importantly a POWER SITTING STANCE.
Happy Halloween Everyone! If you read this far I thank you. If you want more personalized Halloween costume help, please message me here.
Love the Shalom McQueen idea! And super easy ❤️
Andre Leon Talley is HILARIOUS
